Let’s face it, UK summers aren’t what they used to be. When temperatures hit 30°C, sleeping turns into sweating. But now, relief might be on the way.
The government is looking to expand the Boiler Upgrade Scheme to include air-to-air heat pumps, which unlike the current models, also cool your home. That means one system to keep you toasty in winter and chilled in summer.
If the change goes through, you could get up to £7,500 off the cost. That’s a big deal. Right now, these systems can cost around £10,000 to install, so the grant would cover most of it.
Why now? The idea is to future-proof UK homes as summers get hotter. And by using electricity, especially when paired with solar, these pumps can run cleaner and cheaper than gas boilers or old-school air-con units.
Here’s what it means for you:
Cooler summers: Better sleep, less reliance on fans, and fewer sweaty days.
Lower bills: These systems are more efficient than gas or standalone air-con.
Home upgrade value: Future buyers may love the all-year comfort.
⚠️ It’s not live yet, consultation is ongoing and rollout could start in 2026. But if you're already thinking of upgrading your heating or adding air-con, it might pay to wait and see.
