Thinking about an electric car but put off by the price tag? That might be about to change.
The government has officially launched a £650 million grant scheme to make EVs (including many affordable models) cheaper for everyday drivers. It’s the first time since 2022 that private buyers (not just fleets) can get direct help with the upfront cost of going electric.
Here’s what’s included and what it could mean for your budget.
What’s in the package?
🚘 Up to £3,750 off new EVs
Drivers can now get up to £3,750 off new electric cars priced under £37,000. The cleanest vehicles qualify for the full amount, while others get around £1,500. This tiered discount runs until the end of the 2028/29 financial year.
🔌 £25 million for home charging
No driveway? No problem. Funding will support 20,000 under-pavement street chargers by 2026. Ideal for people in terraces or flats who park on the street.
🚚 £30 million for depot charging
Extra investment will help delivery firms and local fleets go electric, making your parcels and taxis cleaner too.
Why it matters for your wallet
Let’s break it down. Say you’re eyeing a new EV just under £37,000. A £3,750 discount brings that under £33k instantly. Even if you’re shopping used, pressure on new car prices could help bring second-hand EVs down too.
Then there’s fuel:
- Charging at home costs about 7p per mile
- Driving on petrol costs closer to 14p per mile, based on HMRC advisory rates
That alone could save you hundreds of pounds a year if you drive regularly.
This new grant is the strongest support EV buyers have had in years, and for many, it could be the final push to ditch the petrol pump.
